Ralph Warrick, age 86, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at Shasta View Estates (Shasta View Nursing Center) in Weed, CA.
Ralph was born in the Midwest. His mother brought him to Chico, CA in the train when he was one year old. She remarried and had another son- George (now deceased). The two brothers grew up together in Chico, and remained close all their lives. Ralph graduated from Chico High School and immediately enlisted in the Navy for four years. Upon his return home he went to college for one year on the G.I. bill.
Then began a very interesting and respected job history: He "rose from the ranks" in banking, from a teller in northern California to a downtown Los Angeles executive vice-president. He also obtained his pilot's license and flew small planes to remote bank branches, solving any problems they had. He retired from banking as a branch manager in 1978. His additional occupations include owner/operator of two pawn shops and an ice cream store.
He had three children from a prior marriage: Tod (now deceased), Mitch in southern California, and Keri in Montana. His grandchildren are Travis in Arizona, Kayla in Montana (along with two great-grandchildren there, also), and Scot and Chris in Sacramento, CA. Other family members include his brother's wife Judy and their three daughters- Lynn, Mary, and Stacey, and their children.
Ralph met his fourth and current wife Jean on a blind date in 1974 and they married eight months later. They have had many adventures, having traveled extensively in their RV, and taken cruises to Hawaii and Alaska, the eastern seaboard and down the St. Lawrence Seaway, and through the Panama Canal.
Ralph had a real heart for people. For fifteen years he volunteered five days a week at a southern California food bank connected with his church. He also faithfully put together birthday bags for convalescent home residents each month for twenty years. He has especially enjoyed gardening, walking his beagle Molly, playing dominoes, and square dancing. One of his greatest loves was spending time with his grandkids Travis and Kayla, as well as looking at photo albums and playing bingo. His kindness was seen through his smile.
When Ralph and Jean had been married for 29 1/2 years and Ralph was 70 1/2 years old, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. He was in his sixteenth year of enduring this dreaded illness when he passed away. Ralph was able to remain at home under Jean's care for almost seven years, with the help of friends, neighbors, their church family, George and Judy, and caregiver Victor. When his condition worsened, he was brought to live at Willow Springs Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Redding, CA for almost four years. When his condition deteriorated further and he became unable to walk, he came to live at Shasta View Estates (Shasta View Nursing Center) in Weed, CA, where he has currently lived for five and one-half years. He received wonderful care at both of these facilities. Jean has been able to visit hime once a week when he lived in Redding, and almost every day while he resided in Weed. In 2018 they had been married for 44 years. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
Ralph's Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church of Mount Shasta at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14, 2018, with a luncheon following.
