Melvin “Tudy” Smith passed away in the care of his loved ones on February 13, 2022.
Melvin was born to the late Samuel “S.C.” Smith and Ola B. Smith. Raised in Mount Shasta, Ca., he grew up in the company of his mother and father as well as his brother and two sisters. Melvin enjoyed playing football and baseball during his school years, where he also served as class president during his junior year. After graduating from Mount Shasta High, Melvin continued his higher education at Chico State University. Once completing his education at CSU, Melvin relocated to the Bay Area where he managed Smith’s Clothing Store for several years. While doing so, he and his sister Annies “Polly” and brother-in-law Bernard, were business partners in a popular Downtown Oakland club, Wine Skeller, from 1979-1983. He then embarked on a long and successful career in the insurance industry for over 25 years.
In 1975, Melvin was blessed with his first-born child; Amari, with then partner Debra Hampton. He later went on to marry Shirley Smith in 1988. Together they were born two children: Samuel Chauncy (1983) and Jewel (1986). Melvin later married Nanette “Nina” in September of 2002. While Melvin and Nina did not share any children together, Melvin cared for and loved Jiru, his stepson, as though he were his own. They shared many hobbies such as cooking, day trips to casinos, traveling, and a love for pets.
Melvin enjoyed spending his free time in the kitchen, reading, and caring for his family. He was an avid 49er, Giants, and Warriors fan and enjoyed talking sports and politics with his kids. A highlight of Melvin’s life was when he was promoted to the title of “PaPa” in 2013 with the birth of his granddaughter Janelle followed by his grandson, Travis in 2016. Melvin could often be found spending time with his grandchildren whenever possible.
Those closest to Melvin would describe him as a generous and kind man who would go to great lengths to help those in need. Melvin cherished his family and was a loving Son, Brother, Father, Husband, PaPa, Friend, and so much more. He loved us all beyond words.
Melvin leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Nanette Smith; children Amari Smith (Aileen Aurich), Samuel Smith and Jewel Bisset (Wesley); grandchildren Janelle and Travis (Jewel And Wesley); stepchildren Kiichijirou “Jiru” Estrelon, Emmett Blunt and family, and LaShawn Harris and family. He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel “S.C.” Smith and Ola B. Smith, as well as his brother Larry G. Smith and nephew Samuel Troy Harper. He is survived by his sisters Annies Smith-McCarden (Bernard) and Darlene Hurst (Ronnie- preceded); God-sister Mary Sampson and family, nephews Monte Smith, Jamaal McCarden, Justin McCarden, as well as Amari’s mother, Debra Hampton; and Shirley Smith, mother of Samuel Smith and Jewel Bisset. In addition to those named above, Melvin “Tudy” Smith leaves behind many cousins, and a large, loving, and extended family.
