Life Story

Eugene Paul Lachawicz

Eugene "Gene" Lachawicz passed away on February 18, in Dunsmuir, where he had lived for nearly 25 years. Gene was born on September 1, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. His family moved to Fresno, California in 1947. He married Nila Ross in 1957. They moved to Coarsegold in 1978, then retired to Dunsmuir in 1998, the year after Gene accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Gene attended San Joaquin Memorial and Fresno High Schools. He earned an AA degree in Marketing and Advertising at Fresno City College, and worked in retail sales for many years, then later, in outside sales. During Gene’s 20 years in Coarsegold, he was the owner of the Coarsegold Chevron for 10 years.

While living in Coarsegold, Gene was the drummer with the Swing Connection dance band, performing at a variety of venues in Fresno and Madera counties for 18 years. After moving to Dunsmuir, Gene joined the Dunsmuir Gun Club and was instrumental in starting the Dunsmuir Gun Club Pistol Match over 20 years ago, which is an ongoing monthly event to this day.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Nila, and their four children: Cassandra (John) Tiersma of Dunsmuir, Christina Lachawicz of Coarsegold, Arthur (April) Lachawicz of Clovis, and Victor (Shannon) Lachawicz of Coarsegold. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Christopher and Crystal Lachawicz, Bryon, Caleb and Amanda Walsh, and Cole Lachawicz, as well as great-granddaughter: Jamison Cano.

The funeral service will be held on Friday March 4 at noon, graveside at the Dunsmuir Cemetery, weather permitting. (Otherwise the service will be at the Cascade Community Church in Dunsmuir.)
