Obituary

Rick passed away peacefully on September 24th, 2022 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

Born to John and Marian Matthews on December 9th, 1949 in Santa Ana, California. Although he was an only child, he was extremely lucky to have grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins near and dear to him as he grew up. He graduated from Foothill High School in Santa Ana in 1968. Prior to that, he worked to pay for flying lessons and soloed at age 17. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and finished boot camp at Fort Ord, California. He was assigned to the 589th Engineer Battalion and completed a tour in Vietnam at the Phan Rang air base, primarily as a large vehicle mechanic. He finished his military service at Fort Hood, TX.

Returning home in 1971, he enrolled in classes at Santa Ana Junior College; primarily art, printmaking and design. It is here that he met his future wife Kathie Friend. He started a small and very successful business in his parents’ garage doing silk-screening and architectural signage in 1973, eventually working out of a building in Orange. Rick bought a single seat Formula Ford Lola in 1974 and enjoyed racing and has been a lifelong motorsports fan and automobile enthusiast ever since.

He and Kathie were married in 1975, bought a house in Tustin and had two sons, Chris and Curtis in 1980 and 1981, respectively. By 1991, the family moved from Orange County to Mount Shasta, which was a perfect match for them, with endless hiking, skiing, mountain biking, motorcycle rides on forest service roads, swimming and making great new friends. Rick continued his business out of the home they had built. The family remains forever grateful for all of the amazing lifelong friends they have made since making the move.

Rick found time to work at the ski park teaching skiing for three years and eventually started volunteering with the Shasta Disabled Sports program. He loved construction, woodworking, and creative projects. Rick and Kathie have themselves built three homes in the Mount Shasta area, as well as numerous silkscreened limited edition prints depicting the Mt Shasta area and its unique scenery. Rick has also created many custom wood pieces such as benches, tables, cabinets, and display cases.

He is survived by his wife Kathie, sons Chris (wife Amy Furniss) and Curtis, grandsons James and Aaron Matthews, two aunts and multiple cousins.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences can be sent to P.O. Box 1313 in Mt. Shasta, and any contributions made to: Mt. Shasta Rotary Foundation / Shasta Disabled Sports, mailed to: Donna Boyd, 314 Sheldon St. in Mt. Shasta, CA 96067.
