Obituary

Judith Lynn Bohnert was born on May 2, 1944, in Boston, MA, the eldest of two daughters to June Bohnert (a teacher and homemaker) and Dr. John Bohnert (a US Naval Lab Researcher). Judith spent her early childhood in Pittsburgh, PA, and the family later moved to Washington, DC—where she sang as a tenor in her youth choir. Judith earned the honor of 1962 class valedictorian at Anacostia High School before attending and graduating from the University of Michigan.

Judy moved to Chicago for a position teaching high school mathematics. While there, she was introduced to Arnold Breyer by her friend and his cousin, Donald Breyer. The couple relocated to Hermosa Beach, CA, and were married in Manhattan Beach in 1968. Judy and Arnie, as they were best known, eventually headed north to Mount Shasta in 1974. They raised three daughters in the small, idyllic mountain town, where much of Judy’s time was spent taking her girls to dance and gymnastics classes, swim meets and soccer games, music lessons, and social events. A skilled seamstress who also enjoyed gardening and canning her own foods, Judy was also an avid reader with a renowned “gift of gab.” She worked at Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta and Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka doing hospital administration for many years, before retiring to Kauai in 2004 with Arnie. Once there, Judy worked at the popular KONG Radio station for more than 10 years—where she made lasting friends and ‘ohana. In 2018, Judy and Arnie returned to California. Judy lived with her daughters for several years after Arnie’s passing.

Judith Bohnert Breyer peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by her daughters, on September 18, 2022, in Ojai, CA, following a two-year battle with lymphoma. She was 78 years old. Judith is survived by her sister, Janice (Betsy) Bohnert and brother-in-law, Roger Wilson; her daughters, Johanna Breyer, Sarena Garcia, and Marisa Breyer-Smith; her sons-in-law, Ryan Smith and Genaro Garcia; and her grandchildren, Karmelo Garcia, Lexina Garcia, and Huxley Ray Breyer-Smith.
