On January 16, 2023, Marilyn F. Birkett, a beloved mother, grandmother and wife, passed away peacefully at 88 years old. She was born to Fay and Freeman Shackelton on July 10, 1934 in Oakland, California. As a young student in Oakland, she enjoyed art and languages. At the age of 18, Marilyn used her saved earnings and moved to San Miguel De Allende, Mexico to study at an art university. While there, she met Antonio (Toni) R. Cansino (a matador), and they were married (1953-1972). She and Toni wanted a large family - they had seven children.

Marilyn was well organized and did an outstanding job cooking, cleaning and keeping up with a family of nine. Marilyn loved spending time outdoors and got her children outside for walks, berry picking and camping on the Scott River and Pacific Coast. While raising seven children, she found time to teach catechism weekly. For years, family members heard how Marilyn was their “favorite teacher.”

In 1972, Marilyn enrolled in the LVN program at College of the Siskiyous. Her first job as a LVN was at Weed Convalescent Hospital (Shasta View Nursing Center). Marilyn then primarily worked at Mercy Hospital(Dignity), Mt.Shasta. She had a heart for the elderly and thrived in this environment.

In 1976, Marilyn married Norman Birkett. Norman and Marilyn enjoyed several years of sailing at Lake Siskiyou and Mexico. Marilyn enjoyed attending the Scottish Games in Woodland and Livermore as often as she could with her husband, Norman, and their Westie dogs. She was able to take a trip to Scotland and twice to her beloved Ireland. Marilyn also took delight in spending time with her friends in the Red Hat Society.

After a significant injury in 1985, Marilyn completed a program to enable her to work as a chaplain. She worked as a chaplain at Mercy Dignity Hospital (Mt. Shasta) until she was 73. She then embraced being a full-time grandmother.

Core to Marilyn’s life-style was living a Christian life. She was fully committed to serving within St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in multiple committees including Eucharistic Minister, Altar Society, St. Vincent de Paul’s, and Bereavement Committee.

Nothing pleased Marilyn more than when her family was all together. For years, Marilyn hosted Thanksgiving, Christmas and July 4th get-togethers. St. Patrick’s Day was a grand holiday for Marilyn. She took her children out of school and celebrated with a planned adventure and Irish festive food.

Marilyn would like to have her life remembered as “one of service”.

Marilyn is predeceased by her parents, Freeman and Fay Shackelton; brother, Leland Shackelton; son, Tony Cansino; grandson, Cameron Davis; Children: Catherine Cansino (Cork McGowan), Carisa (Kitty) Cansino, Celesta Cansino (Rob Parks), Carmen Cansino, Caroline Cansino (Rick Cabitto), and Christina Cansino; Daughter in law: Cristi Cansino; Grandchildren: Roxanne Rafter, Cameron Davis, Ryan Linares, Drew McGowan, Zane Cansino, Myles Cansino, Antonio Perez-Cansino; Step grandchildren: Ty Parks, Heather Parks.
