Obituary: Robert Spalding

Robert Spalding passed away at home on January 31, 2021. He was 88 years old.

Born in Oakland to Paul and Catherine Spalding, he served in the Army in Germany during the Korean War, working as a code tracker. After his military service, he graduated from St. Mary’s College, married his first wife, Julie, and together they had five children. He started his career as a parole officer in Alameda, and moved to Humboldt County in 1964, relocating years later to Siskiyou County, where he worked for five years before his retirement. During the course of his career, he worked with juvenile offenders from San Francisco to Crescent City.

He is survived by Nancy Spalding, his wife of 45 years; his children Michael Spalding, Matthew Spalding, Catherine Spalding, Dan “Danny” Spalding, and David Spalding; his step-children, Vickie Shanafelt, Shelly Jansen and Mike Vincent; as well as thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bill Spalding and Jim Spalding, as well as his step-son Scott Vincent.

He loved golfing, fishing, road trips and had a passion for reading. He always participated in reunions with his Army unit. He remained a steadfast fan of his hometown sports teams, the Raiders, A’s and Warriors. He had the most beautiful singing voice, and enjoyed singing in the adult choir at College of the Siskiyou’s for 10 years. But most of all he is described by his family as “the most wonderful guy a person could ever know,” and will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather. His loss is deeply felt.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a future time.
