The South Siskiyou Swim Team finished second overall at the three-day Weaverville Invitational over the weekend.  “I can’t express how hard these kids have worked and given themselves to the team to achieve all the goals this season,” head coach Rich Viturino said. “I can’t wait to see how the team performs as we hit our end stretch the next two weeks.”
He added that the squad had impressive swims by multiple members, and broke 90 percent of each individual’s personal times.
“The swimmers have impressively broken 42 individual event team records in multi age groups this weekend,” Viturino said.
The following swimmers placed in their individual age brackets. Kaley Lanier took first place in the girls 9-10 division, while Rhian Viturino tied for first in the girl’s 13-14 age group.  Mihret Chandler finished in second place for girls eight and under. Mia Michelle Morris was second in the girls 13-14 division. Alex Rhodes finished third in the boys 15-16 category, while Travis Kuendig was third for boys 13-14. Lucy Borgen placed third in the girls 9-10 division.
The team racked up relay wins, with the  9-10  girls taking  first and second place, with a great swim by Emma Grace Degraffenreid helping her group come from behind. The 11-12 boys medley relay  squad finished in first thanks to the leadership of Daniel Richards, Coach Viturino said. The girls 13-18 team took first in the Freestyle relay. The boys 13-18 team finished second with an impressive time of 1:54.75 by Seth Charter, Alex Rhodes, Travis Kuendig, and Behr Marshall.
The second place finish was the highest placement at the Weaverville meet for South Siskiyou since the new staff took over five seasons ago, Viturino said. The invitational had Spirit Meet awards, given to the squad with the most team, individual and meet spirit. Led by team captain Rhian Viturino, coach Viturino said that "the spirit on the pool deck this weekend was impressive and high energetic."
Team captains Travis Kuendig and Behr Marshall lead the dancing  - from a luau to the congo line -  with help from Pat Hill, Seth Charter, and Alex Rhodes. South Siskiyou finished first in the Spirit Meet, which was the highest placement for spirit for the team at this event.
South Siskiyou will host the Scott Valley Swim Team in the yearly Siskiyou County meet at the Weed Bel Air Pool this Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
