The Mount Shasta Bears fell at home on Senior Night to the University Prep Panthers 29-8 on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Bears gave it their all against U-Prep, which came into the contest tied for first in the Mid-Valley Football League.
Mount Shasta led 8-7 at the half. The Panthers roared back in the second half to pull away for the 21-point win.
“Tough loss Friday night,” Bears head coach Dave Kindley said. “Another game where we were outnumbered by a bigger program.”
Kindley was pleased with the way his squad played against U-Prep in the first half.“The first half was a full on slugfest,” he said. “U-Prep is one of the top scoring teams in the north state and my guys played tough defense and held them to seven points in the first half.”
Mount Shasta scored in the second quarter on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Cole Kindley to Darius Smith. Gaspar Rodriguez converted the 2 point conversion to give the Bears the one-point lead.
A factor, Kindley said, is Mount Shasta is a small squad playing  both sides of the ball, while U-Prep does not.
In the third quarter, he said that the Bears “ran out of gas trying to keep up with them.”
“We had some costly turnovers and they capitalized on them,” Kindley said. “Just like every week my guys show a ton of toughness and they never quit.”
U-Prep improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the MVL, and are tied with East Nicolaus in the MVL.
Mount Shasta is 1-2 in the MVL and 3-5 overall. In the junior varsity contest Friday, Mount Shasta lost to U-Prep by the score  of 35-7.
The Bears will be on the road for their final two regular season games, as they  look to end the year 5-5 and earn a playoff berth.
This Friday, MSHS will be at Hamilton, which is 0-3 in the MVL and 1-7 overall. On Nov. 8, the Bears are at Trinity, which is currently 1-2 in the MVL and 1-7 overall.
“We will get back to work this Friday night and make a run for a return to the playoffs,” Kindley said.
