Justin Bates accomplished his goal of running a sub-three hour marathon, finishing the race in 2:54.17, with an average pace of 6:39 per mile.

Justin Bates, a 2001 Mount Shasta High School graduate, qualified for the Boston Marathon at the California International Marathon last Sunday in Sacramento.    The California International Marathon is certified and sanctioned by the USA Track & Field (USATF) organization, and is a Boston Marathon and US Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier.   Justin accomplished his goal of running a sub-three hour marathon, finishing the race in 2:54.17, with an average pace of 6:39 per mile.
Because the 2020 Boston Marathon qualifiers have already been determined, Justin qualified for the 2021 Boston Marathon, which will be held on April 19, 2021.  Justin and his family plan to travel to Boston for the event. The qualifying time for the 2021 Boston Marathon in Justin’s age group (35-39) is 3 hours and 5 minutes, which Justin shattered by over 10 minutes. Justin also beat the qualifying time for the 18-34 age group of 3 hours.
Out of an estimated 13,000 registered marathon and marathon relay runners in the California International Marathon, Justin finished in 805th place. The overall winner of the Marathon was Elisha Barno of Kenya in 2:13.36.
Justin currently resides in  Rocklin, Calif., with his wife Jennifer and two-year old daughter, Melia.  
Justin’s mother, Karen Bates, and grandparents Cap and Verna Capovilla and Mary Bates are all Mount Shasta residents.
