Grant Lane continued his strong inside play, scoring most of his 21 points in the paint and putting down two dunks, while the slashing drives of Tripp Rodriguez got him 10 free throws and kept the Lions in foul trouble.

The Weed Cougars varsity boys basketball team shook off a tenacious Etna squad with a 25 point final quarter to take a 65-44 win Friday night in Weed. It was the Cougars 11th win in 13 games.

A harrying Cougar defense held Etna to 19 points in the first half, and Weed took a 10-point lead. Grant Lane controlled the boards, getting the Cougars off to a fast start with eight points in the opening quarter, and Tripp Rodriguez hit a three and sank five free throws in the second quarter to keep the pressure on Etna.

Kohl Williams and Parker Finley knocked down three-pointers and the Lions outscored Weed 12-11 in the third quarter. Grant Lane put up six points for Weed.

The Cougars put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 25-point outburst keyed by Tripp Rodriguez’s eight points. Tommy Pineda and Grant Lane each chipped in 4 points.

Weed didn’t get its offense into high gear until the final quarter, but their relentless, in-your-face defense held the Lions below their 53-point per game season scoring average.

Etna committed more than 10 fouls in each half and put the Cougars on the free-throw line for double bonus shots.

Joseph Terramagra led Etna with 15 points. He knocked down three of the Lions six three-pointers. Parker Finley hit 2 threes on the way to scoring 10 points, and Cobi Walker had eight points.

Etna fell to 6-8 on the year and 0-1 in Shasta Cascade League play.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, weed downed Burney on the road in convincing fashion, 78-38.

The Cougars were at Trinity Tuesday night, winning in overtime 67-64 to improve to 21-2 overall and 2-0 in the SCL. They entertain Fall River in Weed Friday night, weather dependent.
