The Mount Shasta Bears varsity basketball team ended a wildly successful season last Tuesday.

The Bears lost at Christopher High School in Gilroy 55-46 in a NorCal CIF State 2020 Boys' Basketball Championships Division 5 first-round match.

Mount Shasta was the No. 13 seed, while Christopher was the No. 4 seed.

“It was a great game we should have won,” said head coach Chris Galarsa. “We had some missed free-throws in the fourth that cost us. The score was 39-38 at the end of the third quarter.”

Anthony Pigoni led the Bears with 12 points, while Darius Smith finished with 11. DJ Brown put up nine points for Mount Shasta.

Mount Shasta ended the season 19-10 overall.

“I couldn't tell you how proud I am of every young man on this team,” Galarsa said.

On Friday, Feb. 28, Mount Shasta came away with the Northern Section Division 5 boys basketball title for an impressive third straight season.  The Bears, the No. 3 seed, defeated the East Nicolaus Spartans, the No. 1 seed, 58-51 at Butte College in Oroville.

Last season, the Bears won the Shasta Cascade League, the NSCIF D5 section title, and the CIF Northern California Regional title.

Mount Shasta made it to the CIF D5 state title game, where they lost to D2 school Foothill of Bakersfield at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento last March.
