Authorities seize 53 animals from home in West Virginia

A total of 53 animals -- including horses, dogs, cats, goats and birds -- were seized from a home in Sandyville, W.Va., during a search Wednesday by Jackson County Sheriff Deputies, Humane Officers, State Livestock Inspectors and volunteers. 

Investigators conducted a similar search and seizure at the home in 2006, which resulted in animal cruelty charges against homeowner Malinda Davis, of which she was later acquitted. 

Sheriff Michael Bright described conditions at the scene as “deplorable” and “the worst living conditions I’ve ever seen” in his 30 years of law enforcement. 

The animals are currently being housed at the county Animal Shelter and Fairgrounds, as well as with volunteers. Nearly all of them are reported to be in need of veterinary care. 

Charges are expected to be filed against Malinda Davis and her husband, Harold, sometime next week.
