Siskiyou County’s Oct. 2013 unemployment rate of 10.3 percent is more than two points lower than it was at the same time last year.

Between September and October, jobless numbers increased slightly from 10.1 percent, according to statistics released Friday by the state’s Employment Development Department – a trend that is normal for this time of the year in Siskiyou County, said Sheila Stock, Labor Market Information Consultant for the EDD.

“Based on a five year average (Siskiyou’s unemployment) typically increases by 0.3 percentage points and based on a 10 year average it increases by 0.2 percentage points. So we are right in line with the 5 and 10 year average. When looking back over the last few years the unemployment rate did decrease between August and October; however this was not true during the recession years of 2008 and 2009.”

Statewide, unemployment rates increased slightly from 8.2 percent in September to 8.3 percent in October, and the US rate stayed steady at 7 percent, according to the EDD.
