VINTAGE TRAINS TO ROLL INTO DUNSMUIR FOR RR DAYS
Vintage trains from the Union Pacific Railroad and the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola will roll into the Dunsmuir railyards next month as part of its annual Railroad Days celebration June 11-13. Included in the equipment will be a classic "silver plate" dining car dating back to the 1940s. And, as part of the festivities, a rubber-tired "mini-train" will provide rides for kids and adults.
Friday evening there will be a special "Meet The Trains" event with music by the golden oldies band Straight Ahead from Redding.
"Get ready, Dunsmuir, to host rail fans from all over this region, from the Bay Area to Eugene. We're very happy that our negotiations with Union Pacific were successful," said Matt Shuman, president of the Shasta Cascade Rail Society and the Dunsmuir Railroad Days Committee's liaison with Union Pacific.
It's been three years since the vintage trains were part of the railroad festival, a traditional event that dates back to 1941.
Railroad Days 2010 will also feature live music all three days, a noontime Saturday parade, model train displays, kids' activities in the Children's Park Saturday and Sunday, and craft and food vendors.
Prospective vendors can contact Becky Catlett at 235-2511.
Major sponsors for the event include the City of Dunsmuir, the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce, PremierWest Bank, Dunsmuir Mercantile Company, Roseburg Forest Products. Mercy Medical Center, Coca Cola North America, Pacific Power, the Union Pacific Railroad, and the Western Pacific Railroad Museum.
Donation's for this year's Railroad Days are still being accepted. Checks should be made out to "Railroad Days Committee" and sent to P.O. Box 524, Dunsmuir, Calif. 96025.
