Today's News: Our Take - The New Yorker Celebrates Same-Sex Marriage with Bert and Ernie Cover
Move over, Cam and Mitchell. There's another famous same-sex couple that's been waiting in the wings - Bert and Ernie!
The Sesame Street twosome are featured on the cover of the latest issue of The New Yorker, which will go into detail about this week's two Supreme Court rulings in favor of same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act from 1996, which means that same-sex couples who wed in a state where same-sex marriage is legal should legally have their marriage recognized in every other state, even if that other state does not recognize gay marriage. The Supreme Court also overturned Proposition 8 in California, which banned same-sex marriage. The hold on same-sex marriages in the state was lifted Friday and weddings were already taking place that day.
On the cover, titled "Moment of Joy," Bert and Ernie sit close to each other on a couch while watching the Supreme Court Justices on a TV set. Jack Hunter, who created the image, originally submitted it unsolicited to a Tumblr. "It's amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime," Hunter said. "This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate."
Following this week's rulings, Modern Family is considering a wedding between Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). The Soul Man also announced Friday that it will air an episode about same-sex marriage on July 31.
