Today's News: Our Take - Ode to The Vampire Diaries' Silas: Why We Want Him to Stay
He may be destructive and diabolical, but Silas has put the "fun" in The Vampire Diaries' dysfunctional family.
When Silas (Paul Wesley) was first introduced in his true form, a doppelganger of Stefan (also Wesley), we were both nervous about the bleak future for the Salvatore brother, but excited to see Wesley take on a darker role. After seeing what he was capable of when he played "The Ripper," there was no doubt that Wesley relished playing a evil counterpart to his usually sensitive, swoon-worthy Stefan. Six episodes in and with Silas on the brink of death, here are four reasons we're hoping he sticks around.
1. He's funny
We're used to chuckling at Damon's snarky one-liners, but Silas has brought a sense of humor we haven't seen, such as laughing about something so awful like the mayor's death. On Thursday's episode, the jokes kept coming from Silas' declaration of excitement toward his mortality to his knock-knock joke mocking that he killed the mayor, which turned into one of the funniest car scenes on the show yet.
2. Wesley loves to play him
The actor made it known that he loved playing the vicious "Ripper" in Season 3 and was more than thrilled to be playing this season's Big Bad. "I wouldn't mind Stefan staying down [in the quarry] the entire season," Wesley told us before the season began. "Silas has so much pain and anger, but it's masked by a level of light energy and humor." And why does he loves darker Stefan? "I like Stefan without the romance. To me, what makes him so interesting is that ... he always does the right thing because he's terrified of how dark he can go."
3. He fills the void that Klaus left
While we absolutely love The Originals and the fact that Klaus is leading his own series, his void has left a major hole in our sexy bad boy-loving heart. With Silas around, we have another villain that we secretly find ourselves rooting for.
4. He adds dimension to the love triangle
Whether you're Team Damon or Team Stefan, after five seasons the triangle is bound to get stale. The added revelation of Stefan's and Elena's doppelgangers being in love means that Stefan and Elena are possibly destined to be together, which in turn gives Damon a reason to continually fight for her and prove his love, and Stefan fans hope that there's a future. Throw Silas' psycho ex Quetisyah (Janina Gavankar) into the mix along with Damon and Stefan's past lover Katherine, and it's even more fun to watch the doppelganger love story play out.
