Hoy Park in Lake Shastina will be the setting for the first Scott Valley Bank Concerts in the Parks Series event of 2014 the evening of June 13.

Scott Valley Bank’s Summer Concert Series opens its 19th season Friday, June 13, with a TapWater concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hoy Park in Lake Shastina.

The concert is free and family-friendly with lawn-seating, according to a press release.

Based in Portland, Ore., TapWater’s live shows are “particularly appealing to people who want more than mainstream pop,” as stated in the release.

The quintet blends the sound of banjo, steel pans, upright bass, guitar, vocal harmonies, drums and more “into a swirl of highly danceable and strangely exotic music steeped deeply in the roots of American tradition.”

The band features Steve Moore, Rudy Slizewski, Ravi Laird, Arcellus Sykes and Simon Lucas.

TapWater’s seventh release in seven years was produced by seven-time Grammy winner and member of Los Lobos, Steve Berlin. It features multiple performances from members of War, The Motet and James Brown’s band, The Famous Flames.

“We bring together all types of people, people who might not ordinarily spend time together if they weren’t coming to see us,” explains drummer Simon Lucas. “They dance, they have a good time, they enjoy each other’s company – it’s extremely rewarding to facilitate that kind of unity.”
