On TV: Your guide to the Academy of Country Music Awards
Some of the biggest names in country music will perform during a televised show this weekend.
The 50th annual Academy of Country Music Awards air live Sunday on CBS from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys.
Described as “Country Music’s Party of the Year,” tickets have been sold to the public for seats at the event, an opportunity to see a stellar list of industry-best entertainers in person. Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan will host.
Those of us not in Texas for the big night can watch from the comfort of our living rooms.
A mix of chart-topping artists will perform, faces familiar and fresh to country music fans. Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, George Strait and Cole Swindell are among those taking the stage.
Here’s what to know before the show:
SPOTLIGHT ON MIRANDA LAMBERT:
* She’s nominated in seven categories, including Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year.
* Could dominate the Single Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories with her hit “Automatic.”
* Her duet with superstar Carrie Underwood, “Somethin’ Bad,” is up for two awards – Vocal Event of the Year and Video of the Year.
KENNY’S STILL AROUND: Hit maker Kenny Chesney, who just kicked off his Big Revival Tour, received three nods from the Academy of Country Music. His song “American Kids” is up for Video of the Year, Song of the Year and Single Record of the Year. He’s on tour this spring and summer.
THREE NEW GUYS: Three relatively new singers (all guys) in the country music genre are up for a big award, New Artist of the Year. Winning this award could solidify the start of a career and lead to bigger things and more opportunities. Nominees are Sam Hunt, Thomas Rhett and Cole Swindell. No women were nominated in this category.
BIG TIME GROUPS: The Vocal Group of the Year category is packed with star power. Nominees are Little Big Town, The Band Perry, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts and Zac Brown Band.
