Box Office: Elysium Wins the Weekend with a Disappointing Opening
Elysium, the new sci-fi movie starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, nabbed the top spot at the box office over the weekend, bringing in $30.4 million, Box Office Mojo reports. Still, the total was less than recent sci-fi debuts Pacific Rim and Oblivion, and also fell short of director Neill Blomkamp's previous release, 2009's District 9.
The Wolverine dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in its third week, with an $8 million haul.
In related box office news, World War Z, which has been in theaters for eight weeks, officially became star Brad Pitt's highest-grossing film over the weekend. It's earned more than $500 million worldwide.
