Matt Damon's Elysium mission will eventually take him to FX. The cable network has acquired the commercial TV rights to last weekend's box office champ, continuing its streak of buying most of this summer's biggest releases.

Elysium joins a roster of movies at FX that also includes recent releases 2 Guns, The Wolverine, R.I.P.D. and Smurfs 2. The films will all be available for FX's various networks (FX, FXX and FXM) by mid-to-late 2015.

Elysium grossed nearly $30 million at the U.S. box office last weekend, making it No. 1. Set in the year 2154, Elysium stars Damon as a man living on the ruined and crime-ridden Earth, desperate to sneak inside a pristine space station where only the wealthy now reside. Neill Blomkamp wrote and directed the feature, which also stars Sharlto Copley and Jodie Foster.

Other recent FX movie purchases include Despicable Me 2, The Heat, World War Z, White House Down, Man of Steel, Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Purge, This is The End, The Internship, Epic, Iron Man 3 and Pain and Gain.

The buys are a part of a long-term strategy at FX Networks to surround its original series with recent films. "Next year we'll have about 45 broadcast television premieres of significant Hollywood movies," FX Networks CEO John Landgraf told reporters last month.
