It's no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on small businesses. But not as hard as you might think.

Data obtained by the RGJ shows that 122 food businesses in Reno closed between March 2020 and October 2021. Food businesses include everything from restaurants and bars to coffee and ice cream stands, which fall under the umbrella of "food services."

Thirty-nine such businesses have changed hands while 148 new businesses launched during the same time period, according to licensing data provided by the city of Reno's Business License Division.

Despite the seemingly grim report on closures, fewer Reno-area food businesses have closed during the pandemic than between that same period spanning 2018-19, the RGJ found.

During that period, from March 2018 until October 2019, 193 food businesses shuttered, none of which were bars or cabarets.
