Midtown Wine Bar reopens in Reno as Midtown Spirits Wine & Bites with new owners, menu
A wine bar in Midtown Reno that shuttered over the summer has reopened with a new name, owner and menu.
Midtown Spirits Wine & Bites, a lounge bar that regularly features live local music, opened last month at 1527 S. Virginia St. in the space formerly known as Midtown Wine Bar, which abruptly closed in July 2021.
Wine & Bites is owned by two Nugget casino executives, Amanda Flangas and her partner, Anthony Layton-Mathews. Flangas, executive vice president of sales at Nugget Casino Resort, told the RGJ both she and Layton-Mathews, vice president of operations, will continue at the casino while working on their own venture.
"It's been really fantastic," Flangas told the RGJ. "We love this business and we don't mind working that hard. But we are a little tired."
Wine & Bites is open seven days a week, with live music Thursday through Saturday. Flangas said Wine & Bites will feature some of the acts that regularly performed at Midtown Wine Bar, such as jazz-blues musicians Major Nelson and Rick Metz.
As the name suggests, the lounge bar focuses on wines, cocktails and shareable appetizers such as charcuterie, tapas, caprese and beet salads. Signature drinks include a smoked old fashioned and blood orange Cosmo.
"It's ultra 'loungish,'" Flangas told the RGJ. "A little bougie, but not too bougie for Midtown."
