Hometown Recipe: Brats and brew

Barb Appelhans of Poplar Grove/Candlewick Lake shared her kitchen and her recipe for brats for our latest Hometown Recipe feature.

She likes this recipe because you put the cooked brats in a Crock-Pot to keep them warm and simmering in a mixture of beer, onions and spices, freeing up your grill for cooking other food. She says it’s great for parties.

See Barb make her brats with this audio slide show. Or, try it at home with this recipe:

6 chopped onions

1 teaspoon garlic

1 teaspoon seasoned salt

Crushed red pepper to taste

10 brats

1 can beer

1 can water

Chop the onions and place them along with the brats into a pan. Add garlic, seasoned salt and crushed red pepper. Pour can of beer and one can of water over the brats.

Move pan to a hot grill and bring to a boil.

Cook brats until they are no longer pink, then move the brats from the pan to the grill. Cook on grill until all sides are brown, then move back into onion, spice and beer mixture.

The brats can stay in the pan on a grill turned to low until you are ready to serve them or can be transferred along with liquid into a Crock-Pot on low.
