New license plates available for WIU fans

New vanity and personalized plates bearing the school’s logo were unveiled Friday by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who also brought a mobile unit of his office that allows renewal of driver’s licenses and other services at WIU.

White presented Jackie Thompson, WIU’s vice president of administrative services, with a framed copy of a school license plate bearing the letters WIU.

Previously only numeric WIU license plates were available, with 363 currently issued. White said those interested in the new plates can go to and type in plate combinations to see if they’re available. That replaces the former procedure of mailing in three plate combinations and waiting for a return mailing to learn their availability.

White said for each WIU plate issued and renewed, the school gets $25 for its scholarship programs.

The fee to switch to a WIU personalized plate, with letters and numbers, from another type is $116. The fee to switch to a WIU vanity plate, with just letters, from another type is $163.

White also promoted the stop of his office’s mobile unit in the WIU Union. Driver’s licenses or state identifications can be renewed, and other services are available.

"We have 136 facilities statewide," White said. "Now students don’t have to leave campus to participate in the various services."

The mobile unit will be at the WIU Union again from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16, Jan. 25, Feb. 22, March 17 and April 18.

While spending time at the mobile unit, White paused to ask a group of students if they were organ donors. He and others also demonstrated how to use the Web site to look up possible plate combinations.
