Six people injured in accident south of Springfield

Six Northern Illinois residents were injured late Thursday in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 55 near Litchfield.

The crash happened about 11:20 p.m. just south of the Litchfield exit.

According to Illinois State Police, Theresa Sanders, 40, of Freeport was driving a 2002 GMC Safari van southbound and lost control on the snow- and ice-covered highway.

The van went off the west side of the road into a grassy ditch and rolled twice, coming to rest on its top.

Sanders suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. However, five passengers in the van were seriously injured and rushed to St. Francis.

They are: Kattie M. Sanders, 47, of Rockford; and Francis T. Sanders, 30, Edward C. Collins, 42, Julianne Jackson, 39, and Desean D. Sanders, 13, all of Freeport.

Police said Desean Sanders, Theresa Sanders and Kattie Sanders were wearing seatbelts; the other passengers were not. No tickets were immediately issued.

State police were assisted at the crash by Litchfield police and firefighters, Litchfield Ambulance and other ambulance companies from the area.
