Firefighters are being called heroes this morning after a fire nearly claimed the lives of a family living in a cluttered apartment.

The call at 9-11 Harvard Place went out at about 11 p.m. Thursday and soon grew to three alarms. Boston and Cambridge were among the departments that helped battle the blaze.

A mother and her 50-year-old son from the "9" side were hospitalized after the fire. A couple with a young child on the "11" side of the duplex were evacuated during the fire.

Parts of the building have since collapsed.
