Globetrotters to put wizardry on display Dec. 28 in Rockford

Staff reports

Plenty of fancy footwork and entertaining antics will be on hand Friday, Dec. 28, as the Harlem Globetrotters bring their showy game to the Rockford MetroCentre.

The team will be in town as part of its 2008 “Magic as Ever” world tour and will take on the New York Nationals at 7 p.m.

Since they played their first game in 1927 in Hinckley, Ill., the Globetrotters have played in 118 countries on six continents. More than 125 million fans, from presidents and popes to families, have enjoyed basketball wizardry from players with such nicknames as “Big Easy” and “Showtime.”

Now in their 82nd consecutive season, the Globetrotters travel throughout North America from mid-November to April. They spend the rest of the year playing overseas and participating in various special events.

Despite the flair, the team plays competitively for the first 15 to 20 minutes of a game.

The antics begin after the team has established a safe lead.

The “Magic As Ever” tour will contain the typical Globetrotters showmanship but will have a focus on family entertainment, according to the team.

Remaining tickets range from $16 to $33 and can be purchased at centreevents.com or by calling the MetroCentre box office at 815-968-5222.
