Joplin hospital welcomes first baby of new year
It was definitely a different type of celebrating the New Year, as Emily Bickett and Jeremy Cartwright of Joplin celebrated the birth of their daughter, Brooklyn Taylor Cartwright.
The new baby was the first baby born into 2008 in the Joplin area.
“It was a surprise to us about having a New Year’s Day baby,” Emily said, holding Brooklyn in her arms. “We were to have her a few more days from now, but last night, (Monday), they told us we were going to have a new year’s baby.”
While watching the clock move toward midnight, the first sign of the baby coming occurred.
“Actually, my water broke right at midnight,” Emily said. “So we were not even paying attention to the ball drop.”
At 1:20 a.m. at Freeman West, Brooklyn came into this world. She weighed 7 lbs., 3 oz. and was 20 inches long.
Asked what it was like to have a baby on Jan. 1, Emily said it was “pretty neat.”
“I think that she (Brooklyn) will really like it,” said the proud mother. “It’s pretty cool.”
When asked how this compares to other New Year’s events, Emily smiled.
“This is the most fun that you could ever have, bringing a baby into the world,” added Emily.
Emily said that meeting her daughter for the very first time was something she will never forget.
“Getting to meet her for the first time is pretty incredible and seeing her face,” said Emily.
This is not Emily’s first child.
Holding her baby sister for the first time, Alyssa Duehring, 5, was all smiles.
“I am excited about having a baby sister,” Alyssa said. “I want to play with her.”
Off to the side of Emily’s hospital bed, Jeremy was talking on the phone, telling the caller about his daughter.
“This is my first baby,” said Jeremy. “I am excited about having her.”
With being the first baby of the new year, Brooklyn received some gifts from the hospital.
At one time during the media interviews, Brooklyn opened her eyes, looked around and smiled at her family. Jan. 1, 2008, will not only be her birthday, but she will also have a special place in history as being the first baby born in the Joplin area in 2008.
