Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man wanted in connection with the city’s first homicide this year.

DeMichael Foat, 18, will be charged with first-degree murder upon his arrest, police officials said this morning. Police have not released Foat’s picture.

Jermaine Malone, 24, was shot in the head early Tuesday morning after a car crash in the 600 block of South Central Avenue. He was heading north when his car struck a southbound car. Malone then left the vehicle and was shot.

A front-seat passenger in the southbound car was treated at a hospital for a serious leg injury.

That person, whose name has not been released, was shuttled from the scene by a van that was heading south behind the struck car. Foat was an occupant of the southbound van, police said.

Foat made headlines in October when he was shot while he and a friend were pushing a bike near Furman Street and Ashland Avenue.

A car approached them, and someone in the backseat shouted something at them just before shots were fired, Foat told police after that incident.

One bullet hit him in the lower leg. Police found him lying in the front yard of a house.

Anyone with information on Foat’s whereabouts should call Rockford police at 815-987-5824 or Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
