Art final travels around Galesburg

Several Galesburg High School art students received some real-world experience as part of a final project.

Chris Dokolosa’s senior portfolio preparation class was required not only to put together a professional-looking art portfolio, but also to arrange and set up their own personal art shows at various places in the community. Students were responsible for securing a space, setting up their artwork and explaining their choices and things they would change about their exhibits to the class.

For three days during GHS’ finals week, students piled onto a school bus during class time to tour each of the individual exhibits, visiting roughly three sites daily.

All exhibits were required to include a self-portrait, a figure drawing and a still life, projects completed throughout the course of Dokolasa’s nine-week class. In addition, students had to write an artist’s statement to include with the exhibit, all work had to be matted and displayed properly and they had to label each piece of work with a title and the medium used.

“It’s a nice way to get them our into the community,” Dokolasa said. “It’s just a real good community relations project.”

This year’s sites are as varied as the individual artistic styles of the students, all of whom have taken at least three art classes throughout their high school careers.

Matt Luper’s works were posted on boards in the lobby of the Galesburg Post Office. Chance Charles and Stacey Whitaker mixed their pieces on two displays placed in the aisles of Dick Blick. And a large board in the Galesburg Public Library holds pieces created by Jaymi Garrison, Stormie Kimmitt and Rebecca Lytle.

All exhibits will be up through Sunday. The public is welcome to view the artwork.
