Westford native John Nicoletta, 27, died Friday in an extreme skiing accident at the Subaru Freeskiing World Championship in Girdwood, Alaska.

Nicoletta lost control as he tried to ski off a rock formation called the Headwall, according to Girdwood public safety officials.

Nicoletta, a Colorado resident for the past four years, was a 2000 graduate of Lawrence Academy in Groton and the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Nicoletta of 20 Preservation Way in Westford.

“He played hockey, soccer and baseball in school but skiing was his real passion,” his mother, Elizabeth, said Sunday.

Officials said Nicoletta sustained fatal injuries during the fall off the rock wall and his death has been ruled the result of massive blunt force trauma to the chest.

A total of 70 men and 26 women are participating in the extreme skiing competition at the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood.

Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the J A Healy Sons  Funeral Home in Westford.
