Video Vault: Hilarious, heartfelt return to high school in 'Freaks and Geeks'
Jason Segel stars in the new movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and he can be seen weekly on the sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” but I’ll always think of him as Nick, the lovable loser, on “Freaks and Geeks,” one of the best shows in TV history.
Following the lives of “mathlete” Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini, now on “ER”), her nerdy brother Sam (John Francis Daley, now on “Bones”) and their various friends, it was a hilarious, heartbreaking and wonderfully realistic portrait of high school, circa 1980. It only aired briefly in 1999 and 2000, but its influence lives on. Producer Judd
Apatow is THE big name in movie comedy these days, and besides Segal, Cardellini and Daley, the show also starred Seth Rogen (“Knocked Up” and “Superbad”) and James Franco (“Spider-Man” ).
The entire run — including episodes that never aired — is available in a single boxed set with plenty of extras. If you loved high school, hated high school or just plain went to high school, I think you’ll like “Freaks and Geeks.”
