Firefighters save home that had been in family for 100 years

It was a close call for homeowner Ken Fehlner on Saturday night.

Around 7:30 p.m., Fehlner said he smelled smoke as he was inside his 1145 Brinckerhoff Ave. home. Upon exiting the house, he saw the shed behind his other property at 1149 Brinckerhoff Ave. engulfed in flames.

His sons Shawn and Shanon Fehlner live there, and Shawn was sleeping at the time.

Ken Fehlner then grabbed a garden hose.

His main concern: “To get the water on the fire and my sons out of the house.”

Both sons escaped from the house but were upset about the fire. Both houses have been in the family for around 100 years, Ken Fehlner said.

“There was a lot of smoke,” Shawn Fehlner said.

The fire was mostly confined to the shed. Fire officials at the scene had no comment at the time of the fire.

Firefighters and Utica police were still there late into the night.
