Andrew Colwell of Mansfield died Monday night of a gunshot wound to the head.

Police are still searching for suspects in the fatal shooting, Police Chief Arthur O'Neill said Tuesday morning.

Police said Cowell, 18 of Tanya Drive, was found behind the wheel of a running car in the Mansfield condominium complex at 6 Erick Road around 7 p.m., with a gunshot wound.

Police were responding to a call that came in at 6:54 p.m. reporting that  "someone was shot," O'Neill said.

O'Neill said Cowell was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I.,  where he was pronounced dead

"It's an incredibe waste," O'Neill said. "He just graduated high school."

A SWAT team, along with Mansfield and state police, aided by dogs and a helicopter, searched the area.

Police were told between one to three suspects fled the scene, O'Neill said.

"We called in the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council to assist with the search," the chief said.

O'Neill said police were searching for as many as three suspects, but there were no immediate arrests. Police don't believe a vehicle was seen leaving the area or that the shooting was gang-related.

The search continues today.

Despite last night's shooting and last week's call of a SWAT team to arrest a man with a rifle in another Erik Road residence, O'Neill stressed the neighborhood is not unsafe.

He said the two incidents were completely unrelated.

"It is not a bad neighborhood," he said.

He did say he would increase patrols to address neighbors' peace of mind.
