The mother of a toddler who wandered away from home and was found playing in a locked car several blocks away is in custody.

Miller County Sheriff Bill Abbott said the owner of the car found the child behind the wheel Monday morning.

The child apparently walked four or five blocks from his home in Olean to where the car was parked and locked himself in.

The owner of the vehicle notified authorities after he found the child inside the truck, waving at people and playing with the steering wheel, Abbott said.

Abbott would not say if the mother reported the child missing, but said the baby had been away from home for several hours.

Division of Family Services and Juvenile authorities were contacted, he said.

Abbott would not release the name of the mother pending the filing of charges. She was being held at the Miller County Jail late Monday afternoon.
