Father, son die after accident at Winnebago County farm

Staff reports

A father and son were killed Monday afternoon after entering a waste pit at the family farm near the village of Winnebago, officials said.

The names of the victims were to be released after family members were contacted, said Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve DePauw said the incident began when the father, 53, went into a 12-foot deep waste pit to make equipment repairs. He was quickly overcome by toxic fumes created by the animal waste.

One of the man’s sons, who was 20, attempted to rescue his father, but he too was overcome by the fumes.

A second son called 911 at 1:37 p.m., DePauw said.

The accident took place on a dairy farm in the 11500 block of Edwardsville Road.
