Hundreds of quilts – from traditional 19th century patterns to modern-day works of self-expression – will “blanket” several museums and other venues in Lowell, as the Mill City prepares for the Lowell Quilt Festival.

The event kicks off with a gallery night: exhibits, lectures, receptions and more, set for Thursday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 10, with an opening reception Aug. 7, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at select museums and galleries.

About 10,000 quilt lovers are expected to come to the city over the course of the four-day festival, said Connie Colom, executive director of the New England Quilt Museum, which oversees the festival in partnership with several cultural institutions in Lowell.
