Homeless man identified as train victim

A 54-year-old homeless man was identified today as the person who was run over by a train in downtown Monday.

Gregory Buchanan, 54, had his foot severed in the 8:50 p.m. accident behind the Casa De Carnes on Howard Street, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.

Buchanan was flown to UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester to be treated for his injuries, but his condition was not available this morning.

Buchanan had been arrested twice previously for trespassing on railroad property, the last in May, Shastany said.

"It's a stark reminder of how dangerous it is to walk on the tracks,'' the lieutenant said. "We take it for granted that these trains lumbering through the intersections will be easy to move out of the way, but this proves it is not."
