Bears No. 1 pick has back surgery
Bears first-round draft pick Chris Williams had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back early Thursday morning.
Scott Hagel, Chicago’s senior director of corporate communications, said the left tackle would remain on the 53-man roster. He compared the injury to one suffered by cornerback Charles Tillman in 2006. Tillman missed two games that year.
Hagel said it was a new injury, not a pre-existing condition. Williams has missed all but one practice during training camp with muscle spasms. Hagel said doctors discovered the herniated disc when the spasms cleared up, but Williams was still in pain. He said Williams probably suffered the injury in that one practice two weeks ago, when he limped off the field.
