Mosquito-borne illnesses decrease this summer

Ryan Richardson

Last summer West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis were on the wind in Plymouth County. Well, they were in the mosquitoes.

This year of the 66 birds tested for the West Nile virus in the Bay State, only 14 tested positive for the disease. The number of mosquitoes found carrying the virus has also dropped off, with infected mosquitoes found in only 24 pools, down from 65 pools last year. In Plymouth County, it wasn’t until late July that a bird tested positive for the disease.
