Mark Frattaroli, a 16-year-old Winchester resident, died Monday as a result of head injuries he suffered in a car accident in Groton.

Frattaroli is the son of Filippo and Anna Frattaroli of Winchester, owners of Ristorante Lucia on Mt. Vernon Street and Ristorante Lucia “L'Originale” on Hanover Street in Boston’s North End.

Prior to the start of this school year, he transferred from Winchester High School to attend Lawrence Academy in Groton.

Groton police were called to the one-car accident at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, according to a press release.

Frattaroli was traveling in the car with his friend Zach Phillips, at the time of the accident. Both suffered serious injuries and were immediately transported to the hospital. Police have released few details, and have not said who was driving.

According to a memorial Web site set up on Facebook, the car struck a tree at high speed.

Frattaroli wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, according to the Web site.

After Phillips was stabilized at Nashoba Hospital, he was sent to UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

Frattaroli was sent to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston by helicopter, where he later died.

Phillips remains in the hospital and is being kept in an induced coma while his injuries heal, according to the site.
