Boldly go to the theater

The highly anticipated “Star Trek” prequel opens Friday, and Trekkies and action-movie fans are expected to flock to theaters to see the J.J. Abrams movie. GateHouse movie critics who pre-screened the movie have liked it, so we’re looking forward to seeing the “next generation” of “Star Trek” stars. You can read their reviews at www.patriotledger.com/entertainment/movies.

Putt around

Saturday is National Miniature Golf Day, so consider hitting the miniature links this weekend in honor of the day. If you have kids, it’s a great way to keep them entertained for a while, or for adults, it’s a great way to relive your childhood.

Most important of all …

Sunday is Mother’s Day. Men, you haven’t forgotten, have you? Surprise your mom with a phone call (as in that hilarious commercial where mothers pass out in surprise) or make your wife breakfast in bed – just do something special for the moms in your life.

It’s playoff time

The NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing, with both leagues in action this action, so check local listings if you’re looking for some meaningful games. Find schedules at NBA.com and NHL.com.

Reading IS fun

Sunday kicks off Reading is Fun Week, and Monday kicks off Children’s Book Week, so get a head start and hit the library or bookstore this weekend and let your children pick out some books. If you’re looking for suggestions, here’s a good list from TeachersFirst: www.teachersfirst.com/100books.cfm.
