Target sets sights on South Shore Plaza

Discount retailer Target Corp. wants to open a store at South Shore Plaza next year.

Target is negotiating a lease on a 150,000-square-foot store in the wing that’s under construction, said Bill Jackson, vice president of development for mall owner Simon Property Group of Indianapolis.

“It’ll be adding a great use for the mall that’s lacking and it will mix perfectly with Nordstrom and the existing mall tenants,” Jackson said.

Seattle luxury retailer Nordstrom will be the anchor tenant of the 241,000-square-foot mall expansion, occupying 150,000 square feet on three floors. A connected building will contain Target on the first floor and up to 45 specialty tenants and restaurants on the second and third floors. Negotiations with prospective tenants are continuing, Jackson said.

Target also will use 50,000 square feet of existing space under the main mall level for storage.

The new wing, which replaces the former Macy’s building that was torn down last summer, will open next March.

When the project is completed, the mall will contain nearly 1.6 million square feet of leasable space.

The mall owners have applied for changes to the site plan approved by Braintree officials last year. The new plans do not increase the size of the expansion. The town’s planning board will review the application on May 19.

Target, of Minneapolis, has nearly 1,700 stores in the U.S., including 39 in Massachusetts. Its newest local store opened in October at the Shoppes at Page Pointe in Stoughton, and another under construction on Route 53 in Hanover is scheduled to open Oct. 11, a Target spokeswoman said.

Target stores typically employ about 275 people. The discounter is known for introducing “cheap chic” into the discount segment including housewares and clothing lines by trendy designers.

One of the few national retailers proceeding with aggressive store expansion plans in the recession, Target plans to open approximately 75 stores this year, according to corporate filings.
