5 Things to Do This Weekend (May 15-17)
It’s Pizza Party Day!
Get your dialing finger ready – Friday is Pizza Party Day. We suggest planning a pizza party at home (although work pizza parties are appreciated as well – make sure to let your boss know about this special day). Get a movie for the kids and order as many pizzas as needed. Or if you want to eat healthier and cheaper, try making your own pies. There are plenty of good recipes on the Internet – just Google “pizza recipes” and let the salivating begin.
And Friday is also …
National Chocolate Chip Day! Why not celebrate the chocolate chip by whipping up a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies? Or try out some other recipe that involves chocolate chips. Here’s a delicious Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookie recipe from AllRecipes.com:
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups rolled oats
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat together margarine and sugars until creamy. Add eggs, milk and vanilla; beat well. Add combined flour, baking soda and salt; mix well. Stir in oats, chocolate chips and nuts; mix well. Drop rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 9-10 minutes. Cool for 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire rack.
Honor those who serve their country
Saturday is Armed Forces Day, a holiday that was created in 1949 to honor all branches of the U.S. military. Many communities are holding events to honor those who serve, so check the newspaper for listings. If you want to learn more about the day, check out the Department of Defense’s Web site at www.defenselink.mil.
Off to the races
The second leg of horseracing’s Triple Crown – the Preakness Stakes – is Saturday. Did you win big by betting on Mine That Bird at the Kentucky Derby? Why not try again! (Although his odds certainly will be less favorable to the bettor this time.) Or just tune in the broadcast on NBC (4:30 p.m. EDT) to see if Mine That Bird can move toward winning the Triple Crown, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since 1978. Get more information about the race on Preakness.com.
Get ready for the boating season
Saturday kicks off National Safe Boating Week, a time devoted to educating people about how to be safe while out on the water. It’s a good time to bone up on safe boating practices, and it’s also a good time to make sure your boat is in tip-top shape before you take it on the water. For more information, go to www.safeboatingcouncil.org.
