Drama, friendship bloom at Acme Theater's 'Steel Magnolias' in Maynard

Margaret Smith

“Steel Magnolias” brought a new twist to the long legacy of fine dramas from the south, with its story of a beauty parlor as the nerve center of life, death, laughter and friendship in a small town.

In Truvy’s Beauty Salon, six women congregate to share secrets in a swirling cauldron of weddings, divorces, babies, , rivalries and funerals.

Their friendships allow them to face life with grace, determination and really good hair.

The play is best known for the 1989 film version that starred several major actresses, including Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis.

Acme Theater’s production is a chance to see it on stage with direction by Michelle Fisher, whose directing work has garnered several awards.

“Steel Magnolias” is on stage at Acme Theater, at ArtSpace Maynard, 61 Summer St., Maynard, with performances Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21, 27 and 28, and Dec. 4 and 5, and 11 and 12, at 8 p.m. Matinee show Monday, Nov. 29, 3 p.m. Tickets $17, $15 for senior citizens and students.
