Kingston man charged with raping 3-year-old

Staff reports

A Kingston man will be in court today to face charges he raped a 3-year-old girl.

Joseph Gardner, 26, of 95R Summer St., is accused of assaulting the toddler Friday night in Kingston. Kingston police were told Saturday and interviewed the alleged victim and other family members. On Sunday morning, local and State Police went to Gardner’s apartment with a search warrant and arrested him.

Gardner has been charged with rape of a child with force and intimidating a witness. He was held on $1 million bail at Plymouth County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Plymouth District Court.

Kingston Det. Sgt. Robert C. Wells said in a written statement that the high bail is “due to the severity of the crime and Gardner’s prior record.”

Past charges against Gardner include drunken driving, breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property and disturbing the peace.

A woman who answered the door at Gardner’s former home on Howlands Lane in Kingston Sunday declined comment.

No further details were available early Monday from Kingston police or the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
