CHRISTMAS EVE FEAST: 'Ciao Italia' host shares memories, recipes for feast of the seven fishes -- When in Rome, don’t ask an Italian about la festa dei sette pesci. CHEF FEHMI KHALIFA: Brining key to succulent lamb -- Lamb is generally stereotyped as strong or gamy. FLICKS: Cameron takes pricey, self-indulgent risk with ‘Avatar’ - "Avatar” is coming this week. Maybe ... maybe “Avatar” will usher in a new generation of film making. Maybe ... James Cameron will establish himself as a visionary. A genius. A legend. Or maybe Cameron made a bank-busting, self-indulgent hyper-pretentious cartoon about overgrown Smurfs fighting an army of evil, wasteful, selfish, destructive and — GASP! — corporate Gargamels. LIFESTYLE COLUMNS

SCOTT C. SMITH: Here’s to winter’s cheer -- This coming Monday marks our lives in different ways – at least it marks the lives of some of us. FRANK MULLIGAN: Gauging your level of Christmasnicity -- Christmas can elicit many different reactions in adults. Some are reduced to child-like wonder, while others long to kick an elf in the shins. And there are scores of folks who fall somewhere in between the two extremes.

LLOYD GARVER: Wisconsin has a bug - We all know that states have "official" animals, birds and flowers. Until I did a little research, I didn't know that there were also state insects, amphibians and reptiles. For example, the state insect of New York is the ladybug, Missouri's reptile is the three-toed box turtle and the official amphibian of Washington is the Pacific chorus frog. However, recently Wisconsin has taken this naming of living things a step further. America's Dairyland, whose state dance is the polka, has been in the news lately because there is a bill before the state legislature to name a state germ.

DAVID ROGERS: Tuition tax a viable option for Bay State communities -- Despite the recent hit Harvard and others have taken on their endowments, universities should be contributing more to the communities they reside in. At a time when basic municipal services are being taxed to their near-breaking points, it is more than fair that Boston, Cambridge and other communities press universities to pay more for the privilege of being tax exempt.
