Food for Thought: Pick the best ground beef for burgers
Tip of the Week: Beef for burgers
Shopping for ground beef? Decisions, decisions. You’ll find packages marked:
- Regular ground beef or hamburger: The cheapest price, highest fat content (30 percent), shrinks when cooked.
- Ground chuck: Leaner, lower fat (15 to 20 percent), still juicy but shrinks less, best for grilled hamburgers.
- Ground round or sirloin: Leanest at 11 percent fat, becomes dry when cooked medium and above, best for low-fat diets, casseroles, meatballs and meat loaf.

Wise to the Word: Quinoa
New to the North American market is quinoa (KEEN-wah), a staple grain of the ancient Incas and still an important food in South America. The tiny, white pearls expand and cook like rice. They may be used in any rice recipe. Quinoa has been hailed a “supergrain,” offering more protein and all eight essential amino acids.

The winning homebrewers had the opportunity to brew alongside the Samuel Adams brewers in Boston, and their recipes were bottled and available nationally in the 2010 LongShot Variety Package.
I had the old ale and barley wine last night and I thought they were both top notch.
