A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with intentionally burning a 2-year-old boy on both hands and a foot seriously enough to require the child to be hospitalized, according to Lakeville police.

John H. Foley was charged with assault and battery with injury to a child and aggravated assault and battery on a child.

He was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail after his arraignment in Wareham District Court on Wednesday. Pre-trial is set for May 5.

Lakeville police said they began an investigation into the abuse of the 2-year-old boy on April 2, that the child suffered "severe burn injuries" on both hands and a foot on that day at a Lakeville home. The child was initially transported to Morton Hospital in Taunton, Mass., and later transferred to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, R.I., as a result of the severity of the injuries.

It was determined the nature of the burns was not consistent with an accidental burn, police said.

Charges were filed against Foley, who police said was the boyfriend of the child’s mother. The woman was living in a Lakeville home, police said. Foley was arrested on April 5 by Abington (Mass.) Police on an arrest warrant issued by the Lakeville Police Department.

The state Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident.
